For the past couple of days it has been rainy and dreary, so the first thing that popped in my head was to see a movie. Although there a ton of great movies out, my college budget doesn’t like the over $11 price tag (and that’s only the ticket price). So, Cailin and I got creative and created an in-home movie experience that cost a total of $7! Complete with candy, popcorn and ICEES, but with the comfort of being at home in our PJs.
Things You’ll Need to Do it Yourself:
Netflix or Redbox. We chose Netflix since we already have a monthly subscription. I don’t really know of any college kid who doesn’t, right?
Get some buttery popcorn going in the microwave. Being at home also means that you can make your popcorn as fancy as you want. Melt some dark chocolate over it, add some pecans and use the caramel syrup you would typically put on ice cream to make a sweet and salty treat!
Buy some movie candy. Most drugstores and grocery stores have the exact same candy in the exact same boxes as the movie theater. Walmart even has a huge bin of movie candy near the front registers that usually sells for under a dollar. If you want to make it extra special, go to a local candy store and treat yourself to some old fashioned gummies, chocolates and candies. We happened to buy way too much candy for trick-or-treaters at Halloween, so we used that candy stash for our at-home movie viewing.
Get an ICEE! I don’t know about you, but there’s something about the movies and the salty popcorn that just makes me crave one of those insanely sugary, artificiality dyed and flavored slushy things. ICEEs just go hand-in-hand with my movie experience, but getting these treats at the theater can cost an extra $20, so I looked up where you could get one outside of the theaters. Many places have them, such as Burger King, Pretzel Time, some Targets, some Kmarts and often times gas stations. We got ours at Burger King for $1.39!
Plug in some speakers! We got these pretty cool Logitech computer speakers one year to use with our iPods. However, they work great for movies too! It’s like surround sound in your own home without professionally installed speakers. This is what ours kind of looks like. We have an older version, but it produces great sound.
Now all you have to do is pick a good movie, get comfy on the couch and turn out the lights! Our movie of choice was When Paris Sizzles, with Audrey Hepburn and William Holden. I would definitely recommend it if you like classic movies or Audrey Hepburn. Now, rainy movie days don’t have to break the bank!
