Fall Outfit of the Day

BY CAILIN BURKE

For today’s fall outfit I wore this awesome Saturday Evening Post tee that I actually got at a unique gift shop in Buffalo. I tied a crochet sweater around my waist to add an extra fall layer, and threw on my absolute favorite ripped boyfriend jeans. These jeans are perfect because if you don’t feel like wearing tight skinny jeans just yet but it’s too cold for shorts, you can wear a loose boyfriend cut.

I also love the half bun topknot trend since it’s an easy way to make it look like you put some effort into your hair even if it only took 30 seconds! What are some of your favorite fall trends? Whether they be hair, beauty or style we want to know!

We’re always looking for new music to listen to and came across the amazingly talented singer, Lidor Sai. He has a debut EP of original songs coming out in November and on top of that, does some incredible covers which can be heard in different places around Los Angeles (and on his Facebook page!) Canoeing and Cliff Jumping in the Berkshires

BY CAILIN BURKE

When looking up things to do near our cabin I saw that there was a 300 ft. deep quarry filled with water that was perfect  for cliff diving! We had to hike a bit to get there, but once we got to the quarry we had the place to ourselves! There were a few heights to dive from, the highest being 60 ft (!!!), but since it is an old quarry there are old wires and scrap metal at the bottom of it so we had to be careful and not jump from too high. We spent a few hours there and it was so cool to be jumping into this swimming hole basically in the middle of the forest.

Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course

BY CAILIN BURKE

We happened to be home for one day prior to our end of summer trip to the Berkshires (posts coming soon!), and were supposed to be packing for our trip. Except we suddenly remembered the Travers was happening that Saturday and that Triple Crown winner, American Pharaoh was going to be racing in it! Of course the race was sold out but we had just set our minds to going and were able to get 3 tickets the night before! We got there super early to avoid traffic and get a prime bench which let us have a spot all day to watch the races before Pharaoh came out.

Feature Friday: Jenny Dale Designs

Happy Feature Friday!
Jennifer Stables
We are so excited about today’s feature with Jennifer Stables of Jenny Dale Designs. The characters she creates in her pieces are so adorable and each one has so much life and personality! We love that she takes the creativity to the next level by accompanying each piece with a poem that tells more about the character and makes for a unique addition to each purchase. Although her art is amazing for a child’s room we still think a lot of these would be great on any wall! They would totally add a quirky touch to your desk space or reading nook. You can tell how much of herself Jennifer puts into these pieces and the happiness that her characters bring to so many people. Keep reading to hear about how she got her start and inspiration.

I grew up in a small prairie town called Bow Island, which has a population of about 1500 people. Currently I live in the town of Okotoks, Alberta, Canada (just south of Calgary, Alberta, Canada). I create artwork primarily for children’s rooms and nurseries and I write poetry to accompany each one. Art has always been a part of my life and I have been painting and drawing for as long as I can remember. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2001 and my Bachelor of Education in 2005 from the University of Calgary. My artwork is sold worldwide through my business, Jenny Dale Designs, and through Oopsy Daisy Fine Art for Kids.

LIC Flea & Food

BY CAILIN BURKE

As much as we love Smorgasburg, we’ve tried so much food there that we wanted to switch it up a bit and had heard the Long Island City Flea & Food Market had a ton of new vendors we had never heard of! Plus, aside from Mets games we don’t head to Queens that often, so we thought it would be the perfect place to spend a Sunday afternoon.

NYC Weekend Brunch

BY CAILIN BURKE

If you know anything about NYC, then you know weekend brunch is a sacred tradition. Well for us, not really a tradition since it is pretty pricy, but we do love to test out new brunch spots once in a while. We had some friends from our hometown come visit and couldn’t let them leave without the typical brunch! So we headed to Cafe Orlin in the East Village at around 11 on a Saturday morning.

IMG_3038

We had heard there would probably be a long wait since all of those other city dwellers love their brunch, and when we got there we saw a few people waiting outside. Luckily, the cards were in our favor because literally 5 seconds after I put in my name for the wait list, we were called inside and got the most perfect private table! It helped that we were a group of four since most people there were in groups of 2 or 3 tops and had to wait for smaller tables to free up.

Happy Feature Friday!

IMG_3341Today we’re featuring the fun (and often hilarious) illustrations of Kelsey DeLange of Honey and the Hive. We fell in love with her prints right away since we’re always looking for sassy sayings to hang on our walls. Not only does she have funny phrases, but she also sometimes pairs the words with food— which we love!, and has gorgeous inspirational prints as well. We just can’t get enough of their cheery vibe and bright colors! Read on to see more of her pieces and learn about the brand.

Feature Friday: Artist & Jewelry Designer Meredith Talian

Happy Feature Friday!

portrait
Photographed by Hannah Smith of Beproaloha.com

This week we are featuring artist and jewelry designer Meredith Talian! When we first came across her work we were completely captivated by her intricately detailed paintings on sea glass. She then turns these paintings into jewelry! We love how the beauty of the sea glass is still prevalent in her pieces. Her paintings truly take advantage of the unique canvas. Read on to learn more about Meredith’s whole creative journey!

Castle Logo: Tell us a little about yourself and your background in art & jewelry.

iusb_760x100.15359782_auk1: Hello! My name is Meredith Talian and I own and operate a small business called LuaLette Jewelry. I was raised by two artists, my father is a graphic designer and my mother is a calligrapher. This, in combination with my grandmother’s life-long love of everything handmade, instilled in me a love of making things with my hands. My father is quite the entrepreneur and my sister and I enjoyed dabbling on the weekends with small businesses my parents would help us run. This really shaped my belief in small business and that success is attainable as long as you keep trying new things. I took a lot of private art lessons as a child which exposed me to many different medias and knew from an early age that I was happiest when painting. I followed this passion and earned my BFA in Painting and Drawing from Longwood University in VA, in the winter of 2011. Since graduating I’ve focused on commissioned portraiture and a watercolor animal series project. My husband’s job moved us to Oahu, Hawaii last July (2014) which made a huge influence on my latest series, LuaLette Jewelry. Hand painting intricate, tiny underwater scenes on found sea glass combines so many things I love and is the perfect culmination of my work thus far as an artist.
