Maker Monday: Stevie Rozean Co.

Happy Maker Monday!

This week we are featuring Stevie Rozean and her amazing shop filled with all things lettering, illustration and design! Stevie can do anything from painting your childhood home or lettering your favorite quote, to designing your wedding invites! She also has a wonderful outlook on pursuing growth as a artist and the importance of practice when it comes to developing your style. Keep reading for great insight and to learn more about Stevie Rozean Co.

: Tell us a few things about yourself!
: I’m 22, passionate about pursing my dreams and inspiring others to do the same, newly married and a sucker for desserts (specifically donuts). I’m from Cincinnati, OH but moved to Springfield, MO about 5 years ago to attend college.

: How did you discover your love of creating art and decide that you wanted to pursue it and start Stevie Rozean Co.?
: I’ve always been an artist, but it wasn’t until about five months ago that I decided to turn it into a business. Throughout middle school and high school I dabbled in starting Etsy shops and occasionally did commissioned pieces for friends and family. I knew I loved it, but I couldn’t clearly see a path in which I could turn it into a career. So I studied journalism (I also love to write) in college and got a really great job as a reporter after I graduated. The job was very demanding, of both my time and energy, from the very beginning. So as a way to decompress after work, I started painting. I would paint from nearly the time I got off work till I went to bed. I started posting pictures of my work on social media and as I did, people started responding. My dream of owning a business was suddenly right in front of me. After much prayer and talking it through with my husband, friends and family, I decided to take the leap. I quit the job that fit perfectly with my degree and paid well to pursue this little business of mine.

Feature Friday: Love Lettering

Happy Feature Friday!
It’s officially wedding season, so there’s no better time for today’s feature with Doris Wai of Love Lettering. She creates the most beautiful hand lettered signs not only for weddings, but loves to create pieces for any special moment in someone’s life! Her work can be seen in just about any type of event — from brightening up a birthday party, to adding a personalized touch to an invitation, menu, or name card! We love how innovative she is, going outside the traditional pen and paper and instead taking her lettering to all kinds of formats such as mirrors, signs, photo props and even furniture! She also takes this innovation into creating new products and utilizing new techniques, and we can’t wait to see the fun, hand lettered items she’ll come up with next! Keep on scrolling to see more of what Doris creates and to learn all about what it’s like to run Love Lettering.

: Tell us a little bit about yourself!

: Hi! My name is Doris Wai and I am a happily married hand letterer and a mom to a wonderful little girl named Melody. I graduated in illustration design from the OCAD University in Toronto but what I realized was that I loved drawing most was letters and type. This passion of mine led me to starting my own business catering to clients in the wedding and event industry, catalogues and print, logo design and currently writing a book about what and how I create my pieces.

: How did you discover your love for lettering and that you wanted to pursue it and create Love Lettering?

: My interest in lettering began when I discovered bubble letters in grade school through a lettering book, if you draw any word in this style, it instantly becomes more adorable! And that is the magic that I see when I look at fonts and typefaces, each one has a different character, gives off a different mood and I find it so fascinating!

Maker Monday: Mollycat Mosaics

Happy Maker Monday!

This week we are featuring Hollie Graze of Mollycat Mosaics! Her mosaic pieces range from small accent decor to large artwork that’s bound to be the focal point of the room! Although many of us have seen a mosaic in our life or remember pasting little pieces of tile on a popsicle stick frame, there are so many factors that can make working with this medium a challenge. Hollie has definitely risen to meet that challenge and we love how her social media gives us a peak into her process. It truly shows how much Hollie and fellow makers pour into their work to give you a unique piece of art. Read on to learn more about Mollycat Mosaics!

: Tell us a little about yourself. What are a few silly things that make you, you?

: What makes me, me? hmmm. I like new projects, the ideas and planning and problem solving are invigorating. I love my balcony and watching birds. I trained my cat to sit and do paw. I have not figured out how to make him not meow for food at 5:00 in the morning. I create part-time and also work as school-based occupational therapist supporting students with disabilities. I have a deep need to contribute, whether by helping others or creating beautiful mosaics that make people happy every time they see it on their wall.

: How did your shop Mollycat Mosaics get started?

: It’s funny, people ask me this all the time. I have no real definitive memory of when I started making mosaics or even what my first mosaic was! I dabbled in so many mediums, basketry, painting, ceramics, stone sculpting, etching. I was always starting something, trying something new. One day I just started mosaicking and never stopped!

Maker Monday: Young@Art

Happy Maker Monday!

This Monday we are featuring Danaye Shiplett of young@art! We love how Danaye speaks through her art. Her pieces are an expression of herself as well as a story she’d like to tell. The imagination behind Danaye’s work leaps off the page. Each character has personality and a message for the viewer to interpret, an attribute that is sometimes lost in more commercialized art. Danaye stays true to her artistic roots and desire to create for herself, and gives her customers the opportunity to share in her creative journey- something we think is truly special about maker’s shops! Read on to learn more about Danaye and how young@art came to be.

: Tell us a little about yourself.

: Every introvert’s dreaded nightmare! (Kidding.) So, my name is Danaye Shiplett and I am a 30-something geek, bookworm, introvert… well, you get the idea. I’m married, live in the South (though I was raised on the East coast), and have two adorable fur-babies. I can’t have children so they really are my kids. (I don’t dress them up or anything, though. Promise.)

: How did young@art get started and what was the process behind getting it off the ground?

: young@art stemmed from my desire to create a professional brand around my art. Something that people see and immediately get a sense of who I am and what I create. It fits me. I am a huge kid at heart and my creations (I hope!) reflect that sense of wide-eyed innocence and wonderment that we have during our early years. I like to think I’ve kept a little (lot) of that even as an adult.

Feature Friday: GlennCoFinds

Happy Feature Friday!

Today we’re so excited to feature Kayla Glenn of GlennCoFinds! What makes it so exciting is 1. Her shop is AMAZING and 2. She just happens to be our very first shop owner of vintage and antique goods! We not only love the items she curates, but also how enthusiastic she is about purchasing items that have a story and a background — making them so much more unique! Successful thrifting and antiquing is not an easy task, and Kayla has a lot of great tips for making your trips really pay off with some incredible finds. We are huge advocates of filling our homes (and closets!) with previously owned items, and GlennCoFinds is the perfect place to begin your journey to making your own space more individualized. Keep reading to learn all about the background of Kayla’s shop and to seriously swoon over the unique treasures that GlennCoFinds discovers.

: Tell us a few things about yourself!

: Hi! My name’s Kayla and I’m a 23-year-old wife living in Iowa City, working full-time as a nanny to the two squishiest turkeys in all the land. Jesus is my reason for being, I’m a college drop out, have 1,632 hobbies, love making things fit perfectly into my trunk, and classic rock comes out on top of the music chain in my world. I am also incredibly sarcastic, which makes my personality seem quite strange through writing.

: All of the products you’ve found for GlennCoFinds are so one-of-a-kind and stand out pieces! What kinds of items initially grab your eye and how would you describe the items you fill your shop with?

: Mid Century pieces are hands-down my favorite things to find. The easiest way to find mid century pieces for me, is by looking out for colors. Pretty specific color pallets were used in the 50’s and 60’s so this makes it a bit easier to spot items on the surface. Interesting enough, most of the items actually in my shop aren’t mid century. These pieces are becoming harder to come by as this style is coming back into rotation for the general public. I also get really pumped when I find something totally weird and unusual. Fact: I wanted our wedding theme to be weird and unusual and my mother wasn’t having it. Anyway, trying to describe my items as a whole is darn near impossible, which makes my collection eclectic, I suppose.

Feature Friday: East and Market

Happy Feature Friday!

Maker Monday: Bloomwolf Studio

Happy Maker Monday!

This Monday we are featuring Betsy Garcia of Bloomwolf Studio! We just love her fun designs and illustrations, and all the amazing products she creates with them! You can find everything from greeting cards, art prints and notepads, to postcards and button pins in her shop! One of Bloomwolf Studio’s aims is to help you celebrate people you love. To think that this sentiment is carried throughout the whole process of creating her products is what makes Betsy’s work so special. Read on to learn more about Bloomwolf Studio and Betsy’s inspiring journey towards achieving her dreams!

: Tell us a few things about yourself!

: I’m a 25-year- old artist, currently living in Orlando, Florida. I am the daughter of Mexican immigrants, and take great pride in my cultural background. I was born and raised in Manatee County, and continue to go home to visit my family every chance I get. From a young age, my parents instilled in me the importance of education and expected only the best from me. After graduating in the top 4% of my class in high school, I continued on to the University of South Florida where I received a dual degree in Psychology and Biomedical Sciences. After graduation, I decided to take some time off from school to ready my application for medical school. What I didn’t expect to do in that time, was start a creative business.

: Where did the name Bloomwolf Studio come from and how did you get your start designing?

: I actually started designing when I was in middle school. I went to a charter school for four years that focused on the arts, so here I took an interest in graphic design and learned to use Adobe illustrator and Photoshop to create illustrations and digital paintings. After those four years, I didn’t use Photoshop again until 2015. This was during what was supposed to be my “gap year” after college. I was living with my boyfriend Luis at the time, and working fulltime as a middle school science teacher. As a way to escape the stress of teaching, I began drawing again. After talking to Luis about potentially starting a small business based on my illustrations, he was completely onboard. I didn’t reapply for a teaching position once the school year ended that year, and we soon started readying ourselves for the launch of what is now Bloomwolf Studio.

Haha, how the name came to be is kind of interesting and non-interesting at the same time, I think. When we were in the planning stages of the business, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to name it. So what Luis did was he pulled up a “band name generator” online, that gave us thousands of random words that were put together to create supposed “band names.” After going through a few, we pulled out words that we thought were interesting and eventually landed on Bloomwolf. I added the Studio after just because I liked how it sounded.

Feature Friday: Soft Bloom Tapestries

Happy Feature Friday!

FullSizeR

Today we have the amazing, whimsical works of Marissa Long from Soft Bloom Tapestries. We are in love with how beautiful and organic her weavings are — and just plain soft and fuzzy looking! The fact that she incorporates so many natural elements into her work (all foraged herself from the Pacific Northwest!) makes her products even more unique and truly have a story behind them. She has a ton of great insight into the world of creating, so keep on reading to hear all about her brand’s start and what she’s learned along the way!

Castle Logo: Tell us a few things about yourself!

unnamed-2: I am 22 and I currently live at the foot of Mt. Hood (Oregon’s highest mountain!), right outside of Portland. When I was a child, my parents were constantly taking my brothers and myself camping and hiking. Getting outside recharges my soul and is still one of my favorite things to do, except now I have a fur-child to come along! I have a golden retriever, Theodore, he goes everywhere with me. I adore plants, I try to be always surrounded by them and that’s why I currently work at Portland Nursery. I also work with Foraged Blooms, creating floral arrangements and helping as needed. I realized early on in life that my heart is fullest when I have a creative outlet, and I love working with mixed medias and trying new things!

Castle Logo: We are absolutely in love with your tapestries! How would you describe your brand and the products you create?
unnamed-2: Thank you! Yikes, that is not an easy question. I describe Soft Bloom as warm, and creative! It’s all about the process of creating something by hand, something that encourages you to touch and explore and experience wonder and warmth. I like to think (hope) that the hangings I create convey my heart, my love of this art form and the way it grounds me and encourages the journey of growth, softness and transformation. I would like to inspire those concepts in the beautiful people that purchase or admire my hangings!

Maker Monday: Looney Collective

Happy Maker Monday!

This Monday we are featuring Elizabeth Looney of the Looney Collective! We love how eclectic and varied Elizabeth’s creations are. If there is something that she can make instead of buy she is going to try her hand at it. Elizabeth truly has the spirit of a maker and we think it is awesome that she decided to share her pieces with the world. You can find the Looney Collective on Etsy, or just shoot Elizabeth an email for a custom request. Read on to learn more about Elizabeth’s journey and advice!

: Tell us a little about yourself

: I’m Liz, a stay-at-home mom with a shrinking amount of free time and an ever growing list of things I want to make! I’m a maker to the core, from making my own cleaning supplies and general health care products for the house to the quirky pieces of art and eclectic bits and bobs I sporadically add to my shop. It gives me some strange thrill to repurpose and breathe life back into forgotten and found objects. You’ll see “vintage” and “upcycled” items in my shop.

: How did you get started with the Looney.Collective and selling your creations through Instagram

: I would say the shop was born from necessity and fueled by intensity. Lol I started making things for myself that I needed or wanted but couldn’t otherwise afford. Every time I learn a new skill or find a new hobby that I greatly enjoy (which is almost all of them) I get this intense urge to just make as as much and as many as I can for several weeks. So this intensity, of course, leads to excess which in turn brings a need to purge the excess. I started off selling and trading the extra wares and goods I was making but then began to create intentionally; the ideas never stopped flowing.
