Feature Friday: The Felting Dorcas

Happy Feature Friday!

We’re excited about today’s feature with Cherylyn of The Felting Dorcas and think you all will truly love the wool products she creates! The wool she uses not only looks so amazing (who else wants to just touch it!?) but we think it’s so important that they’re free of chemicals and harsh dyes. Cherylyn puts so much heart into what she creates and wants to use her work to impact others as well — supporting various causes with each purchase. We are huge advocates of making purchases that have a greater purpose and love makers that use their gifts and talents to give back. So while you may love what The Felting Dorcas creates, supporting her brand has a larger impact! We can’t wait for you guys to keep reading to learn more about Cherylyn and the gorgeous wool products she handcrafts.

: Tell us a little about yourself.

: I’m Cherylyn, currently residing in Melbourne with my family. I am a cat lover and apart from creating, I also love baking! I started my Etsy store, The Felting Dorcas, in 2015 – it focuses on making handcrafted items out of high quality pure wool, like baby mobiles and garlands.

: We love your felt decor! How did your shop, The Felting Dorcas, get started?

: After some experience in the corporate world, I want to run or work in a service-based business that will allow me to use the proceeds to support a needy community. I’ve always liked working with my hands – I used to make cards for friends, was into flower arrangement for a while – so it seemed natural that I started this product-based business that leant into that passion of mine, creating products that I like myself whilst allowing me to contribute more to disadvantaged children and mothers in other parts of the world.

Castle Logo:  We love your Etsy shop, Studio Twenty Six! How did your store start?studio26: I have always had a love for creating and an entrepreneurial spirit. When I was a little girl I remember going to my grandmother’s house and she would let me help her hand stitch her Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt. Ever since then I found a love for sewing, but it wasn’t until college that I got my first sewing machine as a Christmas gift. I worked on a few small quilts over the next few years, and it wasn’t until I became pregnant with my son that I really started picking up a passion for sewing all kinds of fun baby things for his room. As I searched for the perfect blankets, sheets, etc. I found it was hard to find something that fit my style and didn’t scream “baby”. I wanted his room to be modern and unique with a style he could grow with and wouldn’t feel outgrown when he transitioned from baby to “big boy”. I had so much fun creating everything, and with encouragement from my mom I decided to turn my new found hobby into a business. I spent my maternity leave putting together my first wholesale order, and as my wholesale business started to increase, I decided to take the plunge and open my Etsy store 6 months later in February 2016.

Castle Logo: Tell us a little about yourself.

Screen Shot 2016-03-03 at 11.19.26 PM: I was born and raised in Huntington Beach, CA. I went to college at San Francisco State where I studied fashion merchandising. I stayed in SF for about six years before I decided to move back to Southern California to Los Angeles to be closer to my family again. I missed my mom way too much! From there, I worked in the entertainment industry as a wardrobe stylist. I assisted the very talented stylist for the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato for a very crazy five years of my life which was one of the most exhausting and amazing opportunities/experiences of my life. I transitioned to working on styling commercials after that and while that was fun I started to want something else for myself. So now i’m here, still doing wardrobe styling here and there but mostly trying to focus on my glasswork because that’s what makes me happiest. A few random facts about me would be that I’m a crazy cat lady. I have two cats, Frankie and Mia. I’m completely obsessed with them. I play in two women’s recreational soccer leagues, I love bowling, korean bbq and cookie ice cream sandwiches are my favorite thing to eat, and I’m a germaphobe.
