Feature Friday: Aviate Press

Happy Feature Friday!

This week we are featuring Ava Puckett of Aviate Press, a shop of handmade greeting cards and other goods! You’ll be able to find a card for your sassy, funny or sentimental friend from Aviate Press’ amazing greeting card line. We love how Ava has developed her business and how open she is to trying new designs and different strategies to take Avaite Press to the next level. She’s always pushing the limits of where she can go and others have recognized this as her work has been featured on sites like Buzzfeed! Read on to learn more about Ava’s story.

: Tell us a little about yourself.

: Well, I am an illustrator, small business owner, full time job haver and dog lover. I’m originally from Oklahoma City, but came to Nashville to pursue music at Belmont University. I fell back in love with art and illustration after I graduated. During the day I work at MerchCave managing day to day operations.

: We absolutely love your designs and the products you create for Aviate Press! How did you come up with the brand’s name and decide to create such awesome greeting cards?

: Thank you! I was originally going to name it after myself because I had already established brand awareness as Ava Marie Doodles via Instagram and a blog I used to have, but then I read something by one of my greeting card idols, Emily McDowell – she talked about how she wouldn’t recommend naming your business after yourself for several reasons. After that, it took a few weeks of brainstorming and figuring out what voice I wanted to have in the greeting card world. I landed on Aviate Press because ‘aviate’ has my name ‘ava’ in it (cool) and because I liked the idea of incorporating paper airplanes into the logo, to go with the fact that it is all handmade. Once I came up with the tag line, I knew it was a winner: ‘handmade goods to lift your spirits.’

Feature Friday: Des Sottises

Happy Feature Friday!
Today we have the fun, bright work of Margot Tissot who designs just about everything for her brand Des Sottises. You can find her illustrations on cards, posters and prints, tote bags, and even as pins — one of her favorite products to create! Her shop is based in Switzerland and we love getting to showcase amazing creatives and shops from all over the world! The images she illustrates are largely based off of things that inspire her, or are part of her daily life, which creates such a personal product! And we can’t help but just love that she illustrates veggies and makes stuff like broccoli and lettuce look pretty cool. Des Sottises has such an amazing diversity of illustrations and products, so keep reading to see more and learn about the maker behind the brand!

: Tell us a little bit about yourself!

: I’m Margot, I’m a 28 year old graphic/web designer based in Lausanne (Switzerland). Over the years while I practiced graphic design, I developed a passion for illustration and I’m trying to develop my little brand “des sottises” since nearly a year now. Beside this passion for illustration I am fascinated by the whole magical universe (I’m a Harry Potter fan) and I would like to think I’m a sorceress 😀

: How did your shop Des Sottises get its start?

: Des Sottises started in between two jobs. Last year, I lost my dream job for economical issues and I had a few weeks of unemployment. So I took advantage of this time to create my Etsy shop and created a lot of illustrations. I started with the animal alphabet, I made one illustration for each letters and searched for various supports to put them on. The animal alphabet poster, bookmark and pennant were my first items to sale.

My three favourite things are my miniature schnauzer dog called Boris, peanut butter on toast and napping. I’m a queen napper – you’d be surprised at the places I’ve managed to fall asleep in.

: As a graphic designer and illustrator, what made you decide that cards were the perfect format for displaying your designs?

: I always made hand-made greeting cards for family and friends on their birthdays. I would get complimentary comments about them and people would often recommend that I start producing them to sell, so I thought I’d give it a go!

Happy Maker Monday!

This week we are featuring Carolynn Yoe and her fabulous illustrations! Carolynn’s illustration style is so fun, which makes her Etsy store just as fun to look through! Each of her pieces have such character and need I mention the colors! The color palate of her work gives us all the heart eye emojis! Carolynn has a passion for illustrating and implementing it into creations she can share with others. You can find everything from stickers, custom portraits, magnets, coasters, cards and more in her shop! She has many exciting things (including a children’s book!) in the works and she continually pursues her craft, which is one of the reasons she’s definitely an illustrator to watch. To enjoy more of Carolynn’s work and to learn more about her journey, read on!

: Tell us a little about yourself.

: My name is Carolynn and I’m an illustrator. I was born and raised in a small and sunny town in Indonesia, but now I live in Singapore. My daily routine includes blogging and working from my home studio where ideas are scribbled and created into existence. I’m also a dog-person and I’m into snail mail. I have collected postcards for years and most of them are dogs and illustrations.

: You sell your illustrations and designs in the form of stickers, magnets, coasters, cards, colouring pages and more! How did you start your Etsy shop?

: My shop started shortly after I was graduated from University. At that time, I like to draw house portraits and I’d post them on my Tumblr (carolynnyoe.tumblr.com). I received quite a few compliments and people started to ask me if I could help them draw their houses. So then I thought, hey, why not create a shop to make it easier for them to find me. Once I started my Etsy shop, I just kept finding more inspiration to draw and sell.

Feature Friday: Cheery Human Studios

Happy Feature Friday!

We are so excited about today’s feature because we are all about makers that use their artwork to brighten other’s days! That’s exactly what Kristina, the creator behind Cheery Human Studios, does and you’ll know just what we’re talking about once you see the fun and bright illustrated products she creates. She hand draws everything herself which we think is truly amazing and gives so much life and personality to her work! You can find her designs on just about everything, from pins, stickers, and keychains to prints, t-shirts, and accessories! We can’t wait for you to learn all about her background, process, and see work that truly is “cheery!!” — so keep reading to learn more about Kristina and Cheery Human Studios.

: Tell us a few things about yourself!

: Hello! My name is Kristina and I’m a 31 year old artist who was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. I grew up alongside my younger brother (the coolest guy I know) in a cute yellow house in East Hollywood where we were raised by my mother and aunt. For years, I thought I would be a studio musician, a piano accompanist, or a songwriter but life had other plans and I eventually found my way to design. After a year in a masters art program for Web Design and New Media, I was hired as a full-time designer at a studio in the San Francisco Bay Area and I never looked back. Now, I’m based out of Los Angeles where by day, I am a freelance UX / UI designer, which is just a mega fancy way of saying I do front-end design for applications on mobile devices and the web. On early mornings, nights & weekends, I work on Cheery Human Studios. When I’m not working, I love visiting the Wizarding World and Disneyland with my boyfriend, chilling with my cat Mochi, and spending time with my best friends and family.

: Your products and shop name are sure to make everyone smile! How did you come up with the name Cheery Human Studios and what made you want to start your own shop?
: When I started Cheery Human Studios, I was in a bit of a creative slump and a little bummed because of it. For years, I had wanted to start a side project of my own, but couldn’t seem to get one off the ground that made me feel excited and inspired. The name Cheery Human Studios came to me because I wanted to design things that made me and other people happy like magical fandoms and random favorites – cats, flowers, candy, tea, you name it! It started as a way for me to “work with my hands”, hence all of my hand lettered and hand drawn pieces. Doing so, reenergized me and pulled me out of my creative slump.

web_logo2: Hi! I’m Jane Gahng and I’m 36 years old. I’m an artist out of Pasadena, CA. Pretty much do all my work from home and I absolutely love it. I started drawing and painting from a really young age and begged my mom to put me into the afterschool art class in 4th grade. This was my first outside of school assignment art class and I loved it! I learned basics of oil painting, acrylics, watercolor, drawing,….etc. But the real training started when I was in junior high, my mom found a studio of an artist that taught young kids and teenagers like me. She taught me the skills and was pretty strict about finishing assignments. Plus it was always amazing to me that she was an artist that had artwork everywhere in her studio and was showing in galleries all over the world. She even let me paint some things onto one of her large pieces! From there I went to night classes at Art Center in Pasadena during high school and decided to save up money and go to Pasadena City College –> Long Beach State –> Italy to study art for a year abroad. Since then, I’ve dabbled in working in corporate America but I always turn back to doing artwork. Can’t seem to get away from it!
